One Big Eye (Installation Version)
Sobia Ahmad & Benny Shaffer, 2024 / 16mm film transferred to 4K, B/W, sound, 22 mins.
One Big Eye is a hand-processed 16mm film that is part of an ongoing engagement with Pando, an ancient quaking aspen grove that extends across 106 acres in south-central Utah. Seemingly 47,000 individual trees, it is unified by a single immense root system, making it the earth’s largest and heaviest known organism on land. Weaving scientific, folkloric, and mystical ways of relating to Pando, the project reflects on the underground network of roots to explore a shared ecology between human and more-than-human beings. The footage was processed at home over the kitchen sink using an experimental coffee-based developer, which includes other eco-friendly domestic materials such as washing soda, vitamin C powder, and salt.
